Flowers by Melly B are a home studio florist, based in Gymea Bay, NSW, catering for flower and succulent lovers in the Sutherland Shire and South Sydney regions

Our Story

Hi my name is Mel Githens. I am the owner of “Flowers by Melly B”. My story is not like many florists. Originally a Registered Nurse for 18 years. I had a significant life changing event in 2014, I needed to have major hip surgery. During my recovery, I did a lot of soul searching and decided it was the time to give “flowers a go”! It had always been a dream of mine to be a florist. So, in 2015 I enrolled at TAFE and completed my Cert III in floristry and have never looked back!

Since establishing Flowers by Melly B in 2016, I have worked hard to cultivate a unique and recognisable style that showcases my love for floristry and the surrounding bushland and beaches in which I live – the Sutherland Shire. I pride myself in discovering the perfect match between my distinct artistry and the preferences of my clients.

Supported by my family and friends, but perhaps more importantly, believing completely that I could realise my dreams of becoming a florist, I opened my own business. Since then, I have been overwhelmed by the positive response from local customers and their recipients of our blooms and succulents; our beautiful and unique wedding couples; and our business and personal clients for events.

I am also a mother of two gorgeous children – Jack and Abigail. My daughter is also very creative, she loves sitting with me in my studio and enjoys being mummies flower assistant. She now dreams of becoming a florist when “she grows up”! She is the creator of our gorgeous pink flower on our logo!

My relationship with her particularly, has gone from strength to strength. She feels a genuine sense of ownership in the business. I have been able to offer my beautiful young daughter a strong and confident female role model who follows her dreams.

The name “Melly B”

The name Melly was created due to my childhood nickname from my best friend Leah (since we were thirteen) we still remain besties! And the “B” evolved due to Melissa meaning “honey bee” in Greek.   And now here I am!! Enjoying every step of the way, feeling re energised, youthful and enjoying the creative side I have hidden for many years.

Taking a risk and pushing the boundaries of what I thought I could achieve has paid off a hundred fold, and in unexpected ways.

So I challenge you to dream big, follow your passion, work hard and celebrate….

And what better way to celebrate than with flowers?
